You might be surprised to learn that glitch hop beatmaker Freddy Todd and sax-playing funkmaster GRiZ were childhood friends. There must be something in the water around Detroit, because these guys are both ridiculously good producers, and it’s only natural that Freddy’s upcoming ‘Khrysos’ EP will be released on October 2nd with GRiZ’s imprint All Good Records.
Leading up to the release, we’ve got the premiere of single “Sys.hack.” With a mix of synth blips and glitched-out vocal samples set against a backdrop of deep, groovy funk, this cut has an undeniable style that fits right in among the All Good family.
“Super excited to be joining the homies at All Good Records,” says Freddy Todd. “Been friends with Grant (GRiZ) since we were in middle school band class so its only natural to bring it back to the weird stuff. Fast forward many moons, my new EP ‘Khrysos’ literally means ‘Gold.’ I originally was inspired by this Golden Eagle that would fly around our house in Oakland, CA.”
“I used and resampled a lot of analog Moog synthesizer gear for all of the basslines and a lot of the synth lines, which is something new and exciting for me (although ironically with gear older than I am). Shout out Space Jesus and Bleep Bloop for joining me on this adventure and remixing one of the songs, both of which will appear on the record.”
Stream “Sys.hack” below, and stay tuned for the full EP coming soon.
