Toronto’s own Torcha is back with his heaviest offering to date coming in the form of his Monolith EP on HypnoVizion. Living up to its name, this four-track project is thick with weighty low-end, eerie textures, and a sharp focus on space and distortion. It’s a deep dive into the darker edges of dubstep but with enough groove to keep the dancefloor locked in.
From start to finish, Monolith leans into that 140 BPM pressure with a minimalist edge. Torcha plays with classic dubstep elements, sub-bass, syncopation, raw distortion but flips them in a way that feels modern and calculated. The standout here is definitely “Syndicate,” a mind-bending collaboration with skxllflower that hits like an sledgehammer. It’s aggressive, unapologetic, and clearly built to tear through sound systems.
“I wanted to explore the grey areas of dubstep while making a cohesive and dancefloor ready four-track EP. I was inspired by the modern 140 BPM elements we’re hearing today, using classic dubstep elements and experimenting with distortion,” Torcha shares.
