Bare first caught my ear when I came across his Baretraps Volumes 1 & 2 last year. Since then, the talented DJ and producer has blown up in the trap scene creating infectiously tasty tunes that get you hyped and ready to dance. This might have been the plan behind the mastermind’s music as he recently told me,”All I’ve ever wanted to do was make people dance.” He’s recently expanded his sound, creating not only #Bareedit’s and flipping big tunes into full, bouncy, basstatic house tunes, but some of his own originals such as “Medusa.”After seeing him absolutely smash his sets at places like LA’s Avalon Night Club and Santa Ana’s Yost Theatre, I knew I had to learn more about the DJ behind the decks. In addition to falling in love with the funny and humbling Sean Rodela aka Bare during my interview, he’s also had decided to release his latest #Bareedit of GTA’s “Bola” creating “Bola’s Gypsy” just to go alongside it, which you can find at the end of the interview.
So without further adieu, I introduce you to Bare. One of the most rad, down to earth guys I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing. Also be sure to enter for your chance to win a pair of tickets to see Bare work his magic at Avalon for CONTROl Fridays this Friday 3/14,alongside Kennedy Jones, Calvertron, Sam Hiller, and Slander.”
Where did the name Bare originate from? Any anecdote there?
At the start I used it to describe my music. Similar to the likes of a grizzly bear, ruff & rugged. I was much younger and making a louder, angry sound. I switched the spelling to describe the stripped down element of my music. Over the years I’ve matured and so has my sound, branding and logo. I was told to change my name when I started making house music as it would help break me into the house world easier, but I just couldn’t let my baby go. I grew her from the beginning so I had to fight to keep her. I wasn’t changing who I was, just changing my music.
Can you walk us through your various musical phases?
Growing up, when it first began I used to be in several bands.I played guitar in all of them (metal to punk to classic rock- everything). I first started producing by writing DNB with a fellow LA Producer and homeboy 12th Planet. Guess you can say we lost our producing virginities together!
Over time I found my niche in the dubstep or unforgiving term of ‘brostep’ as I was the poster boy for the bass heavy Subhuman Record Label. This was when I was much younger and a bit angrier or confused with life. As I matured over the years, it was near the decline of dubstep, so I began writing trap because it was cool and it helped make me have my fans ready to dance. All I’ve ever wanted to do, was make people dance. I first started raving in the house music scene, so now my journey has been able to take me full circle.
From early interest to actual creative output, how did they tie into your waking life and has it changed from then to now?
It has actually helped me grow not just as a producer but as a human being. I grew up on the wrong side of the railroad tracks I guess you can say. My family was not rich growing up.I didn’t come from the picture perfect life. In fact many times I had to deal with troubles of paying the bills, keeping the electricity on, but no matter what, even through the tough times, I always had my family to support and love me. I come from a Mexican family…we always do everything together, and it’s helpful when your parents help push you towards your dreams and I love them forever for it.
Again as I have matured as a person and as an artist, it has really allowed me the freedom to explore new ideas while implementing old and new tricks alike. Many things in life are just like producing, you just gotta keep working hard for your dreams and you will get there, just look at me!
What was your first big show you played like compared to the shows you play now?
OH Man! Every show is still very similar. I still get nervous and get the butterflies, but once that first track plays out and that first drop hits and I see the crowd react- I begin to calm down and focus on what I need to do next. I think my first big club show was about 5 years ago in Seattle, and it was my first out of state show. I thought that I had made it on top of the world. The older I’ve gotten, I’ve realized shows can only get bigger and bigger especially with all these HUGE festivals all over the world. I recently got to play in Russia and my mind was blown by how crazy the fans were there…Lol to think I was on top of the world by playing in Seattle. I am VERY blessed in what I get to do and where I get to travel. I’ve yet to visit a lot of different countries but I am looking forward to the opportunity!
How has your music developed from when you first started? Any producers/artists that have influenced youor motivate you?
I always get this weird reaction, but I totally look up to Hardwell and what he has accomplished. He is the nicest dude in the world, but he totally worked his ass off and got the recognition he deserved. I hope I can be like him! There isn’t anything specific or anyone specific I focus on, I try to learn something new as much as I can. The one thing no one can take away from you is the tools you can learn to help excel you to your dreams. I try and listen to everything and everyone, you can only learn. Learning is improving yourself. I have noticed, listening to my old music, it wasn’t as good as I thought. But then again, I have improved myself and my music, so naturally it would be as good.
Like the seasons, the latest fashion, or next trend, music is always changing. Where do you see your music headed in 2014? Do you see yourself collaborating with others from different genres such as pop or hip hop? Is it true you are producing for Will.I.Am?
WOW, its 2014?! JK! Time flies, I know 2014 is a whole new year and I hope to capitalize on it. I have a lot of things planned in the pipeline with house music and festival trap remixes. I am always open working with any artist from any genre. If we vibe out, why not make something cool or funky? I know there has been rumors going around about me and Will.I.Am. We do come from the same side of town and yes, we do know eachother but I can’t really say yes or no. You will know soon enough ;)
“The more you write the more things in life will come about.”
Any new releases we can look forward to? I heard some tracks are in the works to be released off CR2, Spinnin’, and Hysteria?
Yes! I have a lot of tunes in the pipeline and hoping to add more. One advice I got from my producing career is to keep writing. Write music that makes me happy, the more you write the more things in life will come about. I’ve been fortunate to successfully make the transfer from being known as a dubstep DJ and producer into a House music DJ and producer because of the hard work ive put into my music writing. I’ve earned the respect of my peers, due to the hard work I’ve put into it. Can’t tell you how crazy the feeling is when you hear that David Guetta, Thomas Gold, Chuckie, Steve Aoki, Sebastian Ingrosso or Nicky Romero plays your music. Whoaa mind blown!!!!
I just had a single on CR2 and remix for my homey Mercer on Spinnin’ within the past couple of months. Looking into the future, I can’t give out details but I can confirm that I will have releases on CR2, Spinnin’ and my HUGE new single on Hysteria. I can’t tell you when either…guess you guys just gotta keep paying attention. I wish I could tell you guys more but I’m super excited to see what everyone thinks!!!
Lastly, since you’re playing at CONTROL this Friday how does it feel being from LA and getting to headline at Avalon?
Probably one of the best feelings ever. It’s honestly weird and sometimes I gotta pinch myself. Avalon is such a historic venue not only in LA but in the whole Electronic Music scene. I remember going to shows there thinking to myself how cool it would be to play at Avalon. I not only get to play at Avalon but I now I get to headline the place?! Are you kidding me, it’s like a cherry on top!! It’s a blessing being able to play in my very competitive hometown in front of my family, friends, fans and hopefully some future fans!
Also be sure to enter for a chance to win a pair of tickets to see Bare play his hometown while he takes over CONTROL Fridays at Avalon!
