Today marks the release of “Joyous People (South East Corner)”, a five-track EP from the enigmatic British electronic duo, JOY (Anonymous). This latest project captures the essence of summer with an electrifying blend of soulful UK garage, footwork, and energetic house. It’s a body of work that showcases the duo’s knack for turning live performance energy into something you can feel through your speakers. As soon as I hit play on the first track my body started moving. When I say footwork, I mean it.
At the heart of the EP is “JOY (By My Side),” a new single featuring UKG maverick Sammy Virji. Already a crowd favorite in JOY (Anonymous)’s recent live sets, the track pairs a soulful vocal sample with Virji’s signature, fast-paced production, creating a tune that’s both nostalgic and fresh. It’s the kind of song that makes you wish summer would never end, even as it perfectly encapsulates its final moments.
But this EP isn’t just about one track. It’s a culmination of the friendships JOY (Anonymous) has fostered and the phenomenal live performances they’ve delivered over the years. Each track on “Joyous People (South East Corner)” offers something unique, yet they’re all tied together by the immersive feel of being at a live show. The duo even weaves in snippets of mic recordings from their recent performances, making it feel like you’re right there in the crowd.
The EP opens with “JOY (Sun on My Skin),” a collaboration with garage legend Todd Edwards and features a spoken-word performance from comedian and actor Reggie Watts. It’s a track that feels both spontaneous and meticulously crafted, setting the tone for what’s to come. Then there’s “JOY (No Slip In My Faith),” a partnership with New Zealand’s rising star Messie, who made a memorable UK debut during JOY (Anonymous)’s takeover of Glastonbury’s Shangri-La Nowhere earlier this year.
This summer, JOY (Anonymous) took their infectious energy to Glastonbury, curating their own stage at the festival’s Shangri-La area. It was only their third time performing at Worthy Farm, but they made it count, going back-to-back with a lineup of their favorite DJs and friends, many of whom appear on this EP. The duo’s recent collaborations with the likes of Four Tet, Skrillex, and Fred again.. only add to the anticipation surrounding this release, further cementing their place as one of the UK’s most exciting dance music acts.
I am quickly becoming a fan of this duo. Their work on Fred Again..’s “Ten Days” caught my attention. Now after hearing this EP and need to see them live. See you on the dance floor soon!
