Toronto’s own Damn Kids will be playing at his upcoming home show Digital Dreams over the Canada Day weekend and to celebrate he’s just dropped this brand new trap tune. ‘Dorkk Part 2’ is a heavy, dark track with lots of high hats and even bells (?!). Check out the free track and check out our exclusive interview with him after the drop!
Who are you?
My name is Stéphane and I am a bass music producer from Toronto.
How were you first introduced to EDM and how did you decide you wanted to start taking your music production seriously as a career choice?
I discovered electronic music in high school when I was about 16 or 17. I was drawn to it from listening to various remixes of bands I liked by electronic artists. It was really an eye opening experience because I didn’t really give much thought to electronic music before that, I had the “All techno sounds the same and its sucks” mentality. I started producing about a year later but I only took music really seriously after I had graduated. After high school I realized that music was a much better medium for me to express myself than drawing or painting, so I decided to peruse producing and DJing as a career.
What can we expect to see from you through the rest of 2013 in terms of material?
I have a few official remixes and I’m sitting on a load of originals. I’ve been making a wide variety of music so expect a lot of diverse materiel.
What do you do outside of producing and touring?
I am not ashamed to admit I am fully addicted to video games and most of my down time is spent playing Xbox.
What advice would you give to upcoming DJs/ producers?
Developing your own sound is one of the most important aspects of being a producer. Big Producers and DJs are always looking for the next big thing so instead of making whats popular make something new and unique. Also, don’t post your tracks in the comments section of Facebook/youtube/soundcloud etc. Most DJs have promo emails to send them tracks so utilize that and don’t be “that kid” in the comments.
Which one of your tracks do you think has been the best received by the fans?
I’d have to say its between “Kavoda”, “Yema” and my “Tarantula” remix, which is kind of odd considering how different they all are.
Where does your inspiration come from in terms of other artists and their music?
The artists that inspire me every time I hear their music are usually Kanye West and Nujabes. Just the quality and depth of their music always makes me strive to get something even close to what they can do.
What’s the most unique thing that’s happened to you at a show?
It’s happened a few times, but not many, where I’ve walked in to a show exactly when one of my own songs gets played. It’s a really weird occurrence but also really awesome.
What is your creative process for writing a track?
Its not always the same, but generally I will start with programming a drum loop or by making a new lead or bass patch. I usually build tracks around one central idea, just adding and layering over it.
Are you looking forward to Digital Dreams?
I am beyond pumped to be playing, I have so much new music to test out and I haven’t played a festival yet so it’s definitely going to be out of control.
Would you rather face one hundred duck sized horses, or one horse sized duck?
100 duck sized horses, easy. A huge duck would be scary as hell, when ducks get mad they will try to kill you. I’ll take a bunch of tiny horses over a mega duck any day.
