Super Unnatural Festival came and went last weekend in the Phoenix-area and it was a spooky and fun-filled time for all as some of the biggest house artists in the world descended on the town. Though the production of the festival was somewhat scaled down compared to last year’s version of the festival, the vibes were still as high and the music couldn’t have been better.
On day 1, it didn’t take long for the party to get started, Sergik and then Waykin kicked things off early before rising star Mita Gami took the stage to perform a dance-heavy set. After that Dombresky came on and went disco inferno with it, with lots of groovy house music to help get people in the rhythm as the sun began to go down. Hugel was next and threw down a unique tribal and afro house set which was unlike anything else heard over the weekend. He really got the crowd moving ahead of what was to come next. After Hugel, dance music legend Eric Prydz took the crowd through a journey, his Pryda alias took over for the majority of the set, putting everyone in a trance as he weaved through a masterful set of his signature progressive house sound, with some of his Cirez D and mainline songs mixed in. Finally, Chris Lake came on and really pumped the energy up with a zany tech house set filled with all of his most recognizable songs. It was a fantastic way to end the first day, but I couldn’t stop there as the festival ended at 11pm and I went back out to see Christ Lake again at the afterparty where he played a different, but equally energetic dance-filled club set.
On day 2, the vibes were just as high with Tommy Toole and Dillon Nathaniel kicked things off ahead of Aluna who threw down a hit-heavy set filled with top-tier house music. Lilly Palmer took the stage after that to throw down the most unique set of the weekend as the only techno artist on the lineup. As the sun went down, she turned the venue into a hard-hitting techno dance party as her high-energy set took everyone to a different plane of existence. Patrick Topping and Fatboy Slim then took things back to the house sound, as they each put their own spin on things with Patrick Topping playing selections from his own label Trick while Fat Boy Slim threw down the classics we grew up with. Finally, Mochakk b2b The Martinez Brothers took us home with a club-sounding house set with with non-stop dancy beats.
Overall, it was a weekend to remember with great music filled throughout from some of the top house artists in the world who don’t often make their way to Phoenix. It was an event not to be missed just for the lineup along but the vibes were high all weekend. The crowd embraced the Halloween spirit of the weekend as many people were dressed up each day and really got into it. As the event continues to evolve in the future, I highly recommend it to all house music fans as again, it brings in artists to the area you do not often see.
