TSS: You are making your return to Arizona after unfortunately not being able to make the show with Martin Ikin earlier this year, are you excited to finally be able to throw down here?
Mau P: Very much! I’ve been waiting for so long and so many people have been messaging about wanting to have me over for a show. I can definitely feel the energy already.
TSS: You are playing Relentless Beats’s new Halloween festival Super Unnatural. Any spooky surprises up your sleeve?
Mau P: Always. I play a different set every show that I do and I’ve been working on a lot of new music that I want to test at the end of the year. Not sure if any of it is considered spooky though haha.
TSS: You are from Amsterdam. Is Halloween a thing there or anything like it?
Mau P: It’s definitely not as big as in the US but some people still organize their own parties and dress up. I remember dressing up as the devil when I was really young. I always had a lot of hair so my mom turned my hair into two devil horns by using a lot of hair products. There’s actually a pretty cool picture of that that I’ve always wanted to use as a cover art for a song. I’ve never experienced halloween in the states so I’m excited to see what’s going down.
TSS: Have you started thinking about any Halloween costumes this year or is that not really your thing?
Mau P: I’ve seen a lot of people go as a Clase Azul bottle (my favorite tequila). It’s a little over played right now but maybe I can find another drink that I can dress up as.
TSS: 2023 has been a big year for you, you have quickly become one of the biggest names in tech house, played festivals such as EDC Las Vegas, what has this year meant to you and how would you describe it so far?
Mau P: This has for sure been the craziest year of my life. So much has happened and it’s like I’ve lived 5 years in 1. I’ve worked very hard for this though so I’m happy it’s all finally coming together. Everyone asks if the touring schedules are very exhausting or draining but I actually love it and get a little bored if I’m at home for too long.
TSS: You’ve not only remixed the likes of Swedish House Mafia, Calvin Harris, and Armand Van Helden but have a slew of your own original releases such as “Metro” with Kevin de Vries and “Your Mind is Dirty.” Tell us about what goes into your release process and what stuck out to these songs you remixed and artists you worked with.
Mau P: It all goes very natural and organic. I play unreleased stuff at shows and we look at what’s creating a buzz online and try to navigate our release schedule through that. I also create a lot of stuff that’s just experimental and I never play it out. I get a lot of remix requests and always go through the original songs carefully to see what I could do with it. Some of these remixes sort of make themselves when I start working with the stems. When I heard the Calvin Harris one for example I immediately knew what to do.

TSS: You also have your weekly XXX radio show. What goes into making that each week and is this something fans can continue to expect from you for the foreseeable future?
Mau P: It’s so much fun because I’m staying very up to date with everything that gets released every week. It keeps you sharp and inspired and also gives you a lot of new ammunition for the actual shows. I very much would like to continue the show and make it bigger. Maybe even get other DJ’s that I love to do guest mixes every now and then? Who knows?

TSS: What else is in store for you as the year begins to wind down and we go into 2024?
Mau P: I’m working on my own events series. We’re starting out in New York at the Knockdown Center which sold out in the pre-sale. We haven’t even announced the name for the events yet and of course there’s a lot of new exciting music in the pipeline.
As you can see it has certainly been a busy one for Mau P. It has been an epic year for the quickly rising artist and we are excited to see what else he has in store. If you are in Arizona, be sure to catch him at Super Unnatural along with a slew of other top acts such as Fisher, Four Tet, Chris Lorenzo, Dom Dolla, and more. Tickets are still available here.
