TSS: For anyone who may not be familiar with helloworld, how would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?
helloworld: I’d describe my music as nostalgic, glitchy, playful, and fun. I take a ton of inspiration from video games and computers etc. (all the things I’m inspired by) and try to make my sounds, lyrics, and melodies feel like they’re connected to those things.
TSS: Who or what introduced you to the world of dance music?
helloworld: I remember it vividly. I was in 9th grade and Beats by Dre were super popular (the cool kids had them lol) and EVERYONE was listening to Skrillex and dubstep. The first dubstep I ever tasted was the UKF August Mix on YouTube. I still listen to it here and there. I was like, “WHAT IS THIS?”’ Then, I remember I tried listening to ‘Still Gettin’ It’ by Skrillex and Foreign Beggars for the first time on some Beats and after that I was like, “I need to make this.”
TSS: You popped onto the scene as an anonymous artist, but that all changed last year. Why did you feel the timing was right to unveil your true self to the world?
helloworld: I started anonymously because I wanted to see how far just the music and vision could take the project. I really believed in the concept of helloworld and was curious if people would resonate with it without a face attached. But, this wasn’t a permanent thing by any means – I love sharing myself through helloworld and I feel like more people resonate with it when there is a face attached.
TSS: When it comes to production, where do you find your inspiration?
helloworld: I find a lot of my inspiration from video games, tech, coding, and toys. I love sounds that come from those things! I try and recreate them all the time in my music.
TSS: Avid bass music fans always seem to have a soft spot when it comes to the vocal-driven, melodic stuff. Why do you think that is?
helloworld: Music that has vocals are just inherently more human – people love to dance to instrumental stuff, but when there is something that they can sing along to and memorize while they’re listening, it’s a much more personal experience. Words to relate to. To sing.
TSS: What hardware and software are you using these days in the studio?
helloworld: I use Ableton! I typically don’t use a ton of hardware in my process, but I do love to use my OP-1. Such a fun piece of gear.
TSS: What’s your creative process in the studio?
helloworld: Man, what a hard question! Every day it’s kinda different and involves me throwing stuff at the wall until something sticks. But, the best way I can describe it is just trying to come up with sounds that inspire me and feel like ‘helloworld’ on that day. I typically will do that and then just keep developing that sound into maybe a beat or a chord progression – then maybe write some lyrics or melodies on top of it. It’s an ever-changing process!
TSS: What is one piece of equipment that helped define your sound?
helloworld: Definitely the OP-1 – I know it’s a 13-year-old machine, but to be honest, I love the imperfection of it. Everything sounds so cute and fun coming out of it and it’s really influenced my direction.
TSS: When you have a rough week or hit a wall creatively, how do you get yourself back on track?
helloworld: I’ve learned to not take these situations so seriously. I used to really judge myself when I wasn’t feeling it – but genuinely – creating music is an experience that really depends on how you feel. If I’m not feeling it one week, I just try to do things that up my mood and make me feel excited again. Such as playing video games, going on hikes, cooking, hanging with friends. I’ve been playing a lot of Elden Ring lately and that’s been a nice thing to escape to.
TSS: Give us the inside scoop on your new collaboration alongside Blanke, “Used To Losing You” featuring Luma and JT Roach, and how it came together.
helloworld: I am so excited about this song – this one came about actually when my manager brought me a song that Luma, Notelle, and Luvrboy wrote together called ‘Used to Losing You’ – it was a really nice duet and they wanted to get JT Roach on it to sing with Luma. Once we got all the vocals together, I produced out a demo that I sent to Blanke. He loved it! We just continued to develop the track together after that and what you hear now is the final product.
TSS: Monstercat is a true electronic dance music powerhouse. How does it feel to continue to have releases on the imprint?
helloworld: I am so happy about it! I grew up listening to Monstercat in study hall in high school. It’s so crazy to stop and think that I have released so many songs with Monstercat now. Surreal, to be honest.
TSS: After starting the year with this colossal collaboration, what’s next for helloworld?
helloworld: This song is a bit left-field for the stuff I’ve been doing with helloworld – I’m usually making more small-room vocal stuff that I sing on – this song was just too good to not want to work on, though. But, after this release, I’m planning on a big project with a ton of music that I’m singing on. I’m so excited to show you all. It’s honestly a bit different than this release!
