TSS: Who or what introduced you to electronic dance music?
I grew up with dance music as a kid, more so early disco influence as my father was a DJ in the late 70s/80s. In some ways, it inspired me because that music was what was played around the house. Around 2004 a cousin of mine introduced me to the sounds of Tiesto and I was immediately hooked from then on and I knew from then on that I wanted to be involved in the music world and I haven’t looked back since.
TSS: Who were your major influences when you started producing?
Marcus Santoro: I’ve had many inspirations over the years, but I have always been influenced by Dirty South, Axwell, Above & Beyond, Armin van Buuren, Sebastian Ingrosso, Steve Angello, Alesso, Cosmic Gate, Avicii, Ferry Corsten, Coldplay, Michael Jackson and many more. All the artists who have inspired and influenced me throughout not only my career but my life have all distinct features and qualities that I have tried to bring into my own way of writing or being creative.
TSS: Some of the biggest names in electronic music are Australian like yourself – why do you think
There’s something about Australian artists that just seem to stick with the rest of the world. With
Australia being pretty far from the rest of the world in the case of Europe & America, it gives us
more of a reason to work towards making our dreams come true and personalities seem to thrive
being in Australia. At least from my experience or with what I’ve seen with other artists…
TSS: Your new single with Roan Shenoyy, “Best Of Me,” is about to drop, tell us a little about the creative process for this one.
Marcus Santoro: Roan Shenoyy and I have been close friends for quite some time now. I remember he sent me the initial idea about a good year ago, I fell in love with it instantly and I was super keen to work on it
with him. The thing I love about this more than anything is the raw emotion it holds. I went back and forth on the arrangement, decided the song would fit in a better key and when we were sourcing a vocal, I felt Nino Lucarelli would be the right fit and he definitely delivered.
TSS: Walk us through a studio session with Marcus Santoro.
Marcus Santoro: Every day is a different experience. I usually start my session with a chord progression which later will follow up with a melody. The drums will follow next, and I’ll start building the arrangement until I get a vibe happening. The best thing about producing or being creative is that you are always learning something new, so if I do find something new to implement into my record, the session is always kept fresh and exciting and that’s the beauty of what we do as producers.
TSS: What else do you have planned for the rest of 2019?
Marcus Santoro: Lots of new music is still on the way, I’ve been writing non stop to make sure I’m putting out the best possible music of my career to date. On top of that, there’s a cool tour schedule in the works, which I’m hoping to visit more parts of the world and get back on the road.
