[TSS Interview] KANDY Discusses Webster Hall, Dream Collaborations, Unreleased Tracks And More!
Brian Bonavoglia

This past weekend we got to catch one of the brightest stars in the dance music at the latest edition on Girls + Boys at Webster Hall, we’re talking about the one and only KANDY. This hometown hero hails from Long Island, New York and with releases on Ultra, Mad Decent, Dim Mak, Main Course, Brooklyn Fire, Big Beat he is quite the force to be reckoned with. Plus, these releases have received support from the likes of Skrillex, Laidback Luke, Kaskade amongst many others! KANDY is the future my friends, you’ve been warned.

We had the opportunity to chat with this talented young gun after his set (which featured a barrage of drums) Friday night!

KANDY ft. MC Vocab – Jungle Freaks | Beatport |

TSS: First off, how does it feel to play a set at the Grand Ballroom of Webster Hall after spending so much time here as a fan?

KANDY: Absolutely incredible. Webster Hall has always been one of my favorite night clubs in NYC and still remains to be. I’ve been attending events there for about 4 years and never in a million years would i have thought that i would be the one up there one day.

TSS: You’ve been attending shows and festivals for years now, how important is it as a producer/DJ to understand both sides of the spectrum?

KANDY: I think it is extremely important to understand both sides of the spectrum because music is always changing & it’s important to keep your head on the dance floor to observe what exactly is going on from that point of view.

TSS: Since you’re from Long Island, how big of a role does NYC play as inspiration/motivation?

KANDY: NYC plays a huge role with motivation/inspiration because home on Long Island there really aren’t many night clubs holding events like they do in NYC. I wouldn’t have came across any of the opportunities I’ve had so far without it.

TSS: Who and/or what track got you introduced you to electronic dance music?

KANDY: Actually believe it or not Myspace played a huge part in introducing me to electronic dance music. I think when I was around 14 years old my Myspace song was Deadmau5’s “Hey Baby”. I fell in love with that style of music from there on out.

TSS: While you’ve had a number releases on a quite few labels, but you’ve done the most with Brooklyn Fire. How did you meet Tommie Sunshine and what’s it been like working with him?

KANDY: It’s funny because Tommie & I always laugh about this story. Back when I attended Electric Zoo 2012 I chased him down with my promo CD hoping that he would listen to it. I ran into him again the following year at EDC Orlando after I had found my way backstage & had a great conversation with him about up & coming producers and what they should be doing to be heard. Two years following we have about 6 tracks together & I currently hold 5 out of the 10 spots on Brooklyn Fire’s top selling tracks!

TSS: Dream collaboration who would it be and why?

KANDY: My dream collaboration would probably be Laidback Luke or GTA being that they were the ones who inspired me to start making my own music in the first place! Laidback Luke was one of the first artist I’ve ever seen live & GTA were the first guys to ever support my music. It’s funny because I actually would tweet Luke like a crazy person telling him that what he does makes me want to become a producer & now he plays my tracks in almost every set!

TSS: Speaking of collabs, you have two on the way with Moska and Juyen Sebulba, can you give us the inside scoop on those?

KANDY: I’m actually extremely excited about these two collaborations. The track I did with Juyen is called “Vogue” & the release date will be towards the end of this month. I’ve played it out in a few of my live sets and people lose their minds! The collaboration with Moska is still a work in progress but were bringing the drums in heavy.

TSS: What can KANDY fans expect from you in the near future?

KANDY: The people that support me can expect lots & lots of new tracks of all different genres. I have a few announced show dates (big thank you to my homies Fight Clvb for bringing me on a few of their tour dates) and some un-announced at the moment. I’m just extremely excited for everyone to hear all my new unreleased music coming soon.
