Bassheads are always checking for what the almighty Lord Nectar might do next as he keeps stomping through the music industry bass bombing music titan. This past weekend he took to Instagram and shared a pic of him in the studio jamming on bass with none other than legendary lead guitar player Tom Morello from the politically charged rock band Rage Against The Machine (and Audioslave, but let’s keep it Rage for now). This has caused a stir in the bass music community and now everyone is trying to guess on what they might be working on. What we know now is…well not very much to be honest. Bassnectar is an enigma and Tom Morrello is just as unpredictable. So calling this is like trying to guess who’s actually running the government (Aliens?). However, this has got our reader based hyped and trying to guess what they might be unleashing on the world. So we’re going to breakdown what this picture might mean and what it might lead to. Here are our theories on what Bassnectar and Tom Morello are working on!
Theory #1: Bassnectar Is Collabing With Tom Morello On A New Track!
I know, not that big a stretch for a theory but let’s be honest that’s what we’re all thinking (and hoping). Now if you’re a follower of Bassnectar, blending genres and different sounds is his forte and part of the reason we love him so much (So so much). In the past he’s incorporated his influences from metal and rock to his bombastic bass rattling electronic sound with tracks like “Immigraniada”, “Where’s My Mind Remix”, and even mixed a few Rage Against The Machine records in his sets. If you look below there’s a sweet video of Bassnectar at Camp Bisco in 2013 where he mixes in “Killing In The Name Of” with a crazy electronic twist. You can also probably see me with a Spirithood jumping around like a lunatic sceaming “FUCK YOU I WON’T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!” It might be that Tom caught wind of this and wanted to take it up another level. Why sample when you can have the real thing giving you the pieces to make a bigger and better song? Not out of the question to think that and it’s probably safe to assume that’s we’re all assuming what’s going on here. Maybe Bassnectar is gearing up for a big new album or project and this might be one of the bigger tracks. This might be along the lines of Skillex working with Korn and The Doors or Modestep working with Skindred on their new record. Trying to bridge the gap between rock and electronic music merging both sounds and fan bases. But maybe there’s more to it than that. Let’s look at some other options.

Theory #2: Bassnectar Is Producing A Record For Tom Morello!
Tom Morello is hailed as a guitar god for his creation of the RATM loud, rambunctious and powerful sound that changed the sound of protest and contemporary rock. Outside of Rage, Tom Morello has made a lot of independent music that spans an array of different genres. Spanning from more alt rock sounds like Audioslave and a few solo projects that sound more like classic folk music that mirrors the protest music written by Tom Hill, Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. It’s possible that Tom is going to try something new and reached out to Bassnectar to be a producer on a project. This might be a blow to the EDM fans but try to understand that Lorin is a music producer first and a electronic DJ/producer second. It’s about M, not always about EDM guys. So there is the possibility that Bassnectar and Tom where in the studio and Tom was letting Bassnectar bring out his skills as a heavy producer and his use of unique use of plug ins and sounds to create something entirely new that he’s never done before. I couldn’t see someone like Tom Morello reaching out to Zedd or Avicii to bring him closer to the electronic world because honestly, that just would be awkward to hear. Bassnectar is a guy with a serious rock background and stands for a lot of the same causes as the Harvard Grad turned male stripper turned guitar god. We can only imagine what a rock record backed up by Bassnectar would sound like and to be honest I wouldn’t be mad if that was the case. Check out the song below, it’s possible it could sound something along the lines of Lorin’s remix “Immigraniada”. However, there are different ways to see this so let’s dig a lil deeper.

Theory #3 They Are Starting A New Grassroots Political Activist Movement In Music!
This might actually go deeper than just music. The comparison between these two artists is actually pretty amazing when you break it down. Both of them are calm minded, humble musicians who truly stand by their convictions politically and seek to enlighten the people by stirring the emotions of discourse in our somewhat complacent society with powerful music. Both of them came from a similar backgrounds musically in terms of being politically aware and pushing worthy causes to their fans. However, they both also had to get around the fact when they said to stand up and rise against authority, it usually ends up with a bunch of kids getting fucked up and losing their minds to loud music. Which isn’t bad really, I mean there music is made to go hard to. They do get people to scoff at authority and come together in a like minded manner but sometimes the medicine gets lost in the sugar. I’ll say a lot of good things about the EDM scene, but one thing we’re defiantly not is politically aware or active. Understandably, because we usually go to shows and festivals to escape the reality of that bullshit. Notwithstanding, when there’s a crowd of 50 thousand plus kids all joining together, moving as one, being positive but not actually accomplishing much of anything outside of partying it’s a bit of a disappointment we can’t do more. So maybe Lorin and Tom thought there might be a way to combine the massive drawing power of Bassnectar and flip it as a political movement of the people. How could they do this? Well, every Bassnectar show there are a ton of vendors and information to different causes that greatly benefit our world and he has been outspoken about his believes in the power of music to sway people towards peace. So it might be the next evolution of that. Imagine if you could take the Bassnectar to a Democratic or Republican convention and thousands of kids are outside making the establishment shake from fear (and bass). It could be very powerful because that’s what Tom and Rage did so many years ago. Rage’s exit from the music scene was a great loss because today we have very few artists in the public eye holding the people in power accountable for their actions against the people and the planet. So if this is the case, it might not just be a dope track…it might just save the world (More than another Swedish House Mafia tour ever would). This might be wishful thinking but it’s a wish I wouldn’t mind seeing.

Theory #4 They Where Just Jamming.
Oh my god if this is the case then what epic tease. What Lorin? You think you can just play with our emotions like that? I still love you but that’s cruel dude. Notwithstanding, artist’s schedules are much crazier than us normal people think. So it is just possible this was a mutual meeting of friends just jamming in the studio for fun and nothing more. It’s still cool to see that these guys are even in the same room together because it gives some credibility to electronic music by virtue of Tom’s great accomplishments in music. Also I get why you’d just want to jam with Tom Morello. If had a chance to jam with one of the GOATs wouldn’t you? If this is the case (and we’re hoping it’s not) we should take this as a win for Bassnectar. He is that class of musicianship and I’m sure he was a huge Rage fan growing up. So meeting Tom must have been a big moment for him personally. We ask for selfies all the time, we shouldn’t get mad if that’s all he wanted to do.
Theory #5 Bassnectar Is Soaking Up Game! (And Maybe Visa Versa)
Bassnectar and Tom Morello are in a rare air of musical accomplishment. Being more than successful to mainstream audiences through their alternative sound but still are exempt from “sell out” or “mainstream” status. They’re both musician’s musicians and men of the people. Bassnecatar is arguably the bigger artist at the moment but it’s not far fetched to think maybe he reached out to Tom for some mentoring about how to keep moving forward as an artist. Lorin has almost conquered the world and is a stand alone in his scene of music, but that being said, he could be bigger. His impact could reverberate much farther and reach more ears but maybe he doesn’t know exactly how to go about it without compromising his message and creativity. RATM was an anomaly in music because they were a breakthrough band on a mainstream level but with a very subversive and radical message. So this might be the OG giving some game to the YG. Visa Virsa, Tom might be trying to get some knowledge from Lorin because of what he’s doing in music. The fact the Bassnectar can sell out the crowds he sells and command audiences respect like he does if very rare in today’s music culture. He does it without spouting a bunch of vapid nonsense or coasting off others accomplishments. Tom might want to tap into some of Bassnectar’s magic and get some to take into his new projects. There’s a lot to gain and there’s a lot to learn. So it’s nice to see that these guys are still very much students of the game and are still trying to do bigger and better things.
Theory #6 ALL OF THE ABOVE!
Why not? Why can’t it be possible that all of these awesome things could be happening? Whatever the case may be, these two standing together says a lot about what we want out of music. We want people who really truly believe in to work together to create something great. Whether it’s music, culture or just creating bonds of friendship. We as music fans seek truth, and it’s hard to find anyone more honest than these two musicians. Let’s hope that this is just the start of something great. While some fans might be mad if this doesn’t turn out any music for them to jam to but I believe when they reflect on this picture and moment it will be a little bit of music history.
We’ll have to see what this is but we can’t wait to find out. Til then…
