In 2014 there is no denying that the music industry revolves around every aspect of the internet. SoundCloud, Spotify, and YouTube have become global platforms for music streaming among the behemoth role that social media plays. As music blogger’s, we are attached to the internet in all forms. Checking emails for press releases, trolling SoundCloud for hours at a time looking for the best and newest music, the list goes on.
Not only has the internet become the ultimate platform for releasing and sharing music, but specifically the dance music community relies on both an open platform and on the open minds for sharing things like bootleg remixes and mashups. For Lido, his highly anticipated remix of “Latch” has been getting love from the likes of RL Grime, Cashmere Cat, and Trippy Turtle (Lido is Trippy Turtle’s alter ego), even though Universal Records (Disclosure’s label) has had the remix taken down from SoundCloud, YouTube, and all other outlets.
Every day, hundreds of bootlegs and mashups containing copyright material are uploaded, and the general sense of sharing music that comes labelled with dance music allows this to freely happen. When Universal Records took down Lido’s incredible remix of “Latch” only 24 hours after it’s anticipated release, the blogosphere erupted into disapproval at the record label’s “un-plur” actions.
I am so sorry guys.
Unfortunately my remix of Disclosure’s “Latch” was taken down from SoundCloud earlier today by Universal Music Group. There is nothing I can do about it right now.But hey, thank you guys SO much for showing my remix so much love that it made them take it down after not even 24 hours. That’s pretty damn cool.
In Lido’s case, the long term outcome of this will be prosperous. A huge record label has noticed him, people are becoming aware of his stellar remix, and with any luck his remix will be released soon, maybe even as an official one. Hey, if you’re quick you can even snag the remix here.
