Although up until recently, Ben Samples seems to have been flying under the radar for a while (that’s only the first in a string of flight-based puns in this article, so get used to it), a couple of years ago, he was one of the best producers in the Glitch Hop scene. After almost 2 years without any solo releases, a few months ago, he suddenly sprouted wings, releasing Sex, Drugs, & Bass, Vol. 2, a very cool EP featuring remixes of an eclectic group of rock songs. From there, he only gained altitude, building the anticipation until yesterday, when he released a brand new album called ‘Flight.’
The album features 8 tracks, and shows an ascension in his sound from a strictly Glitch Hop style into something much more polished and a little more eclectic. This album’s style, with soaring leads propelled forward by driving basslines, falls somewhere in between The Glitch Mob and Big Gigantic (minus the sax and drums of course), but with an added dose of wobbles and sticking mostly within the range of 80-100 BPM. Samples is from Colorado, and the influence of the local scene and the high altitude is very evident in the style of this album.
Overall, ‘Flight’ is a great release, and it is awesome to see yet another awesome album in the vein of funky bass music that has been growing in popularity lately.
