HBO releases ‘Catch The Throne’ Mixtape In Anticipation For The Brand New Season Of ‘Game of Thrones’

HBO wasted no time putting out their ‘Catch The Throne‘ mixtape after teasing it earlier this week with tracks from Big Boi and Wale. Yesterday they released the whole thing and it’s pretty epic. Not as good as the actual show but still… Please understand, here at TSS we are huge fans of the Game of Thrones, both the books and the television series. Also Hip-Hop and Rap music. So this was a must review for us.

This is an awesome concept… I think that artists should treat rap like GoT on the regular and really fight for that metaphorical crown. That being said I would say the best cut on the tape belongs to Snow Tha Product and her track Fire. Which is exactly what it is… She absolutely killed it. She spit mad flames on her dragon flow and seriously burnt the beat up. Ayra’s Prayer by Dominik Omega is a close second. Honestly it sounded to me like Omega knew the most about the series and has probably read some, if not all, of the books. And his flow on the beat reminds me of Linkin Parks ‘Meteora’ album, which I’m not mad about at all. For me those two were the standout tracks of the tape.

Magazeen‘s song Iron Throne, Bodega Bamz‘s joint Win Or Die,Common‘s verse on The Ladder and Wale’s track King Slayer aren’t half bad either. Dee Goodz killed it on The Parallel too. Kilo Kish and Daddy Yankee didn’t really do it for me and for some reason Big Boi on a track titled ‘Mother Of Dragons‘ rubbed be the wrong way, even though he did come through with some pretty sharp bars. The production on the mixtape was pretty cool, with some of the best Game of Thrones quotes and samples laced throughout.

Over all the first ‘Catch The Throne’ tape was a success and we’re really looking forward to the fourth season of Game of Thrones premiering on HBO April 6th at 9 p.m. est. My only hope is that they continue this tradition and put out a ‘Catch The Throne Vol.2’ mixtape next year with different artists. Until then turn up your speakers and choose a side! Valar Dohaeris!
