Where did the name come from?
It started off as a joke. At the time I was listening to a lot of Hot Chip, so that sort of name was already in my head. IT came to me randomly… Hot Mouth…its stupid, silly and easy to remember…. So why not. Plus David Guetta and Above and Beyond were already taken…so…
Who inspired you to get into the EDM production world? How did you start out?
I started out when I was in high school. I used to go to raves with a bunch my friends, when dance music was definitely not cool. When all my friends would be dancing I would be next to the DJ watching him do his thing. From there I started DJing and once I started getting more into the actual music side… I started producing. It’s crazy to think that was 13 years ago. I’m really glad that I still get carded.
If you could pick one track, ANY track (hip-hop, EDM, etc.), to describe your life what would it be?
Two Door Cinema Club – Something Good can work the Twelves remix! Such a good tune.
Outside of the EDM world, what type of music do you listen to?
Phoenix, The Doors, Danny Elfamn, Hans Zimmer, Pretty Lights, Hot Chip, Billie Holiday
Out of all the tunes you have, which one ‘never fails?’
My favorite song that always works is John Dahlback “overdose”. It’s such a simple track, but every time I play it, it goes off.
What is your songwriting/creative process?
My writing process as far as creativity goes always starts with trying to find a new or cool interesting sound that inspires me to make more cool and interesting sounds. It also depends on what mood I’m in; if I’m sad I make a happy song, if I’m happy I make a sad song. Or sometimes I just make something that makes me laugh. If something is broken in my house though, I have to fix it before I can work on music. crackhead.
What is your opinion on the modern DJ and their sets? (In terms of pre-recording).
Honestly I stopped even putting my two cents on this. It seems people on both sides of this argument continue to defend what they think is right or wrong. It has nothing to do with me or what I do. I’m a DJ. I love getting in front of a crowd, playing my tunes, exposing people to new music…watch people have a good time. Its what I do, and what I live for. I think a better question is, what do you think about ever headliner playing the exact same songs as the last “headliner”?…. and to that I would answer…SAD.
What was your favorite venue/festival that you’ve played at thus far in your career?
I got to play EDC 2010 and 2011 both of those shows were pretty surreal for me because I’ve been a fan of electric Daisy Carnival since it was started. I’ve been attending those events for over a decade now, so being able to play those shows were a pretty big deal for me. In addition to that my favorite show I did was the igloo fest in Montréal Canada. I played with Noisia and Renaissance Man. I believe it was 0° outside and I drank nothing but hot wine. The crowd could seem to care less that it was freezing balls outside.
What was it like to be a part of the hugely successful project LA Riots? Did it help your solo career?
It was cool. It’s definitely something that has helped me learn what I want to be as far as a solo artist is concerned. I got to remix some big artists like Tiesto, Lady Gaga, wrote the theme for Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat game, etc etc. I got to travel the world and play shows I wouldn’t have otherwise played, so ya it was a cool experience. However, as much fun as it was I think it’s a lot more fun being on my own and being able to have 100% artistic freedom to do whatever I want.
What can we expect from you in 2013?
I have literally put a hold doing remixes for the time being and I am just working on new original music. So yeah lots of new musics coming this year! A lot of the new things I am working on for me I think is some of my best work, so I’m excited to share it with everyone…wHAMP!
