BOSTON CALLING MUSIC FESTIVAL
ANNOUNCES A SECOND EDITION:
SEPTEMBER 7 and 8, 2013
AT CITY HALL PLAZA

HEADLINED BY
VAMPIRE WEEKEND and PASSION PIT,

JOINED BY
KENDRICK LAMAR, LOCAL NATIVES, MAJOR LAZER,
THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM AND MORE

After having enormous success and selling out the first ever Boston Calling Music Festival in May, Crash Line Productions in partnership with Bowery Presents is excited to announce the second Boston Calling Music Festival at **City Hall Plaza (One City Hall Square, Boston, Massachusetts) on September 7th and 8th of this year. The two-day festival is comprised of eighteen live performances all curated by Aaron Dessner, the same guy who brought us the spectacular May 2013 lineup. Headlined by Vampire Weekend and Passion Pit, this line up has some major talent. Who’s ready for some Major Lazor sound? Major Lazor along with Flosstradamus, Wolfgang Gartner, and Bearstronaut are some of the artist’s featured on the lineup. Unlike other EDM festivals, this music festival is well rounded. Kendrick Lamar along with Solange brings the rap and hip-hop to the stage. Meanwhile Local Natives, The Gaslight Anthem, and Providence’s Deer Tick offer their rock roots to the festival. Whatever kind of music you like, they deliver.

Perched on a hill in downtown Boston, Boston Calling is surrounded by a magnificent view of the surrounding skyscrapers. This ideal location delivers the perfect urban festival vibe. There will be many changes since the first festival in May, the festival will now be comprised of two main stages to accommodate entertainment demand. Also, two beer gardens, a food pavilion comprised of food trucks and local food vendors, and world-class lighting and design by locally based Party by Design are to be expected. Boston Calling will also feature a VIP component whereby VIP ticketholders will have access to City Hall Courtyard, a 25,000 square foot, second-floor Mezzanine offering prime views of the main stage as well as specially curated menus and luxurious amenities. Crash Line Co-Founder Mike Snow shares his thoughts on the second Boston Calling. “We love the diversity, energy, and innovation of the September bill, it feels like one big, post-summer Boston party.”

I couldn’t agree more. As for me, I move into my new apartment fifteen minutes walking distance from City Hall Plaza on September 1st of this year. My fall semester starts the 3rd of September; taking with it my freedom until May of next year. Boston Calling Music Festival sounds like the perfect event to celebrate summer’s final moments and to postpone school just a little bit longer. So all my TSS reader’s, who will be joining us at the second Boston Calling Music Festival on September 7th and 8th this year?

EDC Las Vegas 2013 is less than a week away and we here at ThisSongSlaps are excited as you are, the people, the fans, the headliners for this years annual Electric Daisy Carnival at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway!

We also care about you having a successful and overall safe experience for the time you spend at the festival! Whether this is your first EDC experience or second or so on, we have decided to supply you guys with 10 things we think you should bring to EDC to make it as awesome and successful as it can be!

1. A Plan.

EDC Group
You may be saying “Plan? Yeah I know who I want to see already!” but no… We mean more than just that sort of planning. Have a plan with your group on where you guys will be meeting if you guys want to meet at certain points during the night to catch sets together or it being the end of the festival and time to go back to where you are guys are staying. There is plenty of places that stand out that you can use as meet up spots as just saying a certain stage will be pretty pointless as there will be tons of people at each stage making it difficult to find certain people within the crowd.. Many tend to use some of the attractions Insomniac Events provide for the event as there are usually plenty of them which stick out and are noted on the maps given out at the festival so it’s at a very specific location! Reason being, cell phone reception has always been a issue for in general everyone at EDC so you can’t really be dependent on that as there is just thousands and thousands of people wanting to text or call others in the same area all at once that causes texts to be really delayed or not go through and phone calls to be very choppy, drop, or as well, not go through. So plan ahead! This can be in general for other friends as well that you want to meet up with as it will most likely be really complicated to get in touch with them. The last thing any of us and I’m sure you would want is you or any of your friends to go missing so do yourself a favor and make sure you guys have everything well planned out!

2. Cash

EDC Cash
Many including us prefer to carry just our debit and credit cards compared to cash as it’s just one simple card instead of a bunch of cash in your wallet and is easy to make purchases with just by a simple swipe but for EDC you should consider taking out money from a ATM prior to arriving to the venue. Many of the booths, stands, etc at EDC only accept cash, whether it is for drinks, food, or merchandise. This is for the reason being that there is many ATM’s throughout the venue but those ATM’s are usually full of long lines, that can be a big hassle, and in addition you can get a pretty high fee just to take out some money. So just save yourself time, patience, and a couple dollars by grabbing some money at a nearby ATM to where you are staying or the nearest bank of your chain.

3. EDC Mobile App

EDC App
We have to say this is our one of favorite things to bring that Insomniac Events provides for EDC! Insomniac now annually along with the event releases a mobile application specifically made for the event. They are available for both iOS and Android which we’d like to believe that a good percentage of attendees carry. This application offers great features that can make the experience go much smoother and you won’t miss any of those artists you are so excited to see! You get a list of the all the artists playing at each stage, along with a small summary about them, and the times of their set. Along with that you can create a schedule for yourself to be a bit more organized and it just adds on to the first thing we mentioned which is planning. In addition via the app, you get the latest news and updates surrounding the event and also you get handy virtual map of the entire festival. The application we believe this year will be within the ‘Insomniac’ App which since the other EDC’s this year have been that way. You can find that app in your app store already but it hasn’t been updated to Las Vegas version yet which will probably occur next week on the week of the event. In case the app is separate for this EDC, we will update the post with a link on where you can download it.

4. Ear Plugs

EDC Crowd
We understand many of you are questioning why we are adding this… that it’s not the same…that we need more bass… that it makes the music muffled… but reality is people, our hearing is an important thing as if there is no hearing, then for the most part there is no more music. Overtime, the more exposure you have to a certain level and above of sound, can cause serious hearing loss overtime which we wouldn’t want to happen to any of you. There is actually really good ear plugs made for environments of EDC of loud music that doesn’t make your hearing muffled but basically just lowers the volume for you. We tend to use ear plugs a lot, especially since we know we are much nearer to production, it can be very dangerous so we like to take precaution along with the production crew, artists, and team helping to put the event together and protect our ears which we think you guys, the fans, the headliners, should as well. If you need a suggestion for cheap yet very good ear plugs for EDC feel free to check THESE out as we personally use them and we love them! You can get them for cheap on Amazon or eBay.

5. Gum & Chapstick

EDC Gum & Chapstick
When you connect the dots of a massive festival that involves a lot of moving and dancing in the middle of the hot desert, we are sure you can assume that it will involve you drinking a lot of water and staying hydrated. In addition, your lips will chap and that is where chapstick can come in handy! Also, gum can help a lot as well as chewing gum tends to help keep your saliva flowing to an extent to help prevent dehydration as much as possible so we highly suggest to bring both things to add onto helping you have a great experience. Just don’t forget that gum and chapstick must be sealed before entering the event as security will remove it from you if it is unsealed.

6. Extra Hotel Key

EDC Keycard
Just because, it’s always good to have 2 people in your group with a hotel key if you are staying at a hotel. With all the craziness and fun that will be occurring during the festival, there is always a possibility of things going missing from either it being misplaced or just falling out without the person even noticing. It’s happened to many and the last thing anyone wants to do is be at the front desk of the hotel waiting to get a replacement key early in the morning after a long night… so just save yourself. Have an additional person with a key in the group. This in general applies to just making sure you bring as few personal items as you can to the event and the items you do bring to have them properly placed on you to not risk losing any of your personal belongings.

7. Camera

EDC Camera
Bring a camera, save those great memories that many of us will experience and share them with people. Nowadays, it has become very easy to edit and upload on the go that all you really need is a smartphone to grab a quick shot. If you bring a camera, that is fine also as there will be plenty of moments to capture just make sure that is not a prohibited camera (DSLR, detachable lens). If you plan on using your phone to capture photos and videos, be sure to clear as much memory as possible of unneeded content as you will probably be using up a lot of space during the 3 days of the event.

8. Insomniac Water Bottle

EDC Water Bottle
Now this not everyone can just bring since they might not already own one but we highly suggest purchasing one at the event! They are cheap, durable, and you get free water refills all night at any of the water stations! Take note that due to Insomniac’s online shop being under maintenance, you can only grab one inside the festival itself at a merch booth this year.

9. Phone Battery Pack

EDC Battery Pack
With a mixture of use, heat, and a lot of service traffic in the area, your phone is bound to die at some point during the festival… A dead phone sucks, more if you have to find people at the end to leave with it or meetup with friends since you now have no way of communicating or even trying to communicate with them. Battery packs are always useful for these sort of events as we know many of our own friends who own one and use them at these sort of events! There are cell phone charging stations at the venue but those tend to always be full of lines so these are great to be able to charge on the go while you still get to enjoy all your sets and explore the event. We do warn you though that they are a bit pricey. A good tip though for longer battery life is trying to use your phone the least you can, lower your brightness, put it in airplane mode, and turn it off when you’re not using just to let it last a bit longer.

10. Good Vibes

EDC Good Vibes
Last on the list for our top 10 things we think you should bring to EDC this year is what we think is the biggest and most important thing… GOOD VIBES! Spread the love, not hate. Many come to just have fun and enjoy themselves with those who surround them while listening to some of their favorite artists under the electric sky. Why ruin your own experience or the experience of those around you by spreading hate just because the music they like, the way they dress, etc. Love one another, meet new people, listen to great music, share great experiences, and overall, have fun! If you see anyone in who looks like they aren’t doing well or in bad shape, go up and check on them, talk to them, see if they need anything.

We are the people who make this community the great loving and accepting community it is, let’s keep it that way!

With that, we hope you enjoyed our recommendations and they help you with preparing for next week which will be a great time! For those wondering, we will indeed be in an attendance to EDC and be around the strp during EDC week. See you there!

How do I even begin to describe this night? I got to the club around 10:30 and watched the opening DJs, Fashion Replicas, play and they were surprisingly incredible and set up for Ookay perfectly. Ookay managed to sneak on stage without too many people noticing and then popped up behind the decks and immediately dropped his Star Wars track and the crowd went NUTS. The best way to describe Ookay’s live performance is “crowd control”. He had the entire venue on their feet and going harder than I’ve ever seen the crowd at this club go. He played such a broad spectrum of music over the course of his set and it really highlighted how talented he is not only as a producer, but a performer as well. Enter Borgore.

Borgore was one of the first producers I listened to when I started getting into Dubstep and I had never seen him live before, so you can just imagine how excited I was to meet him and watch him throw it down in my home town. I was expecting him to play a pretty trap heavy set but while there was definitely a lot of trap and electro house tunes getting dropped, he really stuck to his filthy dubstep roots which was a very pleasant surprise. Two of the first dubstep songs I ever heard were Borgore’s remix of ‘Sleepyhead’ by Passion Pit, and his Guided Relaxation Dub, so I was borderline emotional when those were the two songs that he closed his set with. Hands down the highlight of my night was when Borgore got on the mic and told everyone to sit down on the ground and then he played Guided Relaxation Dub, and if you’ve never heard it then you’re a horrible human being and can’t appreciate how INSANE it was when it dropped.

After Borgore’s set was done, I went upstairs to interview Ookay. It went a little something like this:

TSS: Introduce yourself
Ookay: I’m ookay, also known as ookay, and I DJ music. Not country though.

TSS: What is your musical background?
Ookay: I come from jazz and gospel music, I grew up as a little church boy. My dad was a bass player in the church band, and my mom sang in the choir, so I was always around that type of stuff. My dad gave me a lot of insight into that area. When I was younger I listened to a lot of death metal and soul music. I’ve done pretty much every kind of music, that’s why my music is so out there.

TSS: How did you get into trap music?
Ookay: I was a house DJ for about 2 years, and when I was about to quit and become a student I tried a trap tune and a lot of people started to listen so I made a side project that turned into my main project and yeah, here I am.

TSS: Who are your biggest musical influences?
Ookay: My dad, I grew up watching him play the bass. People like Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. That has nothing to do with production, but that’s the music that I grew up listening to and really inspired me to start making my own music.

TSS: What do your parents think of your music/career?
-They actually used to not be supportive, they thought I was just doing drugs and illegal raves. But after 2 years of just working hard on music they saw how much this meant to me and how serious I was about it. I mean they were always supportive, and still are, they just didn’t like the scene at first.

TSS: When did DJ’ing/Producing turn into a career, and not just a hobby?
Ookay: As soon as I started touring a lot and money started coming in and I could use that money to help support my family. The first thing I wanted to do was help out my family, they’re my priority.

TSS: How has it been touring with Borgore and Kennedy Jones?
Ookay: AMAZING! Every show has been packed and out of control like this one. I’ve learned a lot from them and it’s really helped me grow as a performer. Hopefully this tour builds a fan base and lets people know who I am. It’s such a privilege just getting to hang out with all these great DJ’s.

TSS: Describe yourself in BPM.
Ookay: 10BPM, slow as fuck. Just kidding, I don’t know, maybe 120. I like a lot of deep house and I think it suits my personality.

TSS: Have any side projects?
Ookay: I’ve got Coaster, it’s a Deep House thing i’ve been working on.

TSS: Why the mask?
Ookay: It started out with me just not wanting people to know who I was, I wanted Ookay to be kinda mysterious. Then people just got used to it and it became my thing.

TSS: Where did the name come from?
Ookay: Literally no reason. I was signing up for Soundcloud and couldn’t think of a name so I just said “Okay”, but it was taken. So I added another O and people fucking loved it.

TSS: Which do you like more, festivals or shows?
Ookay: I haven’t done a festival yet so I can’t really say. But I really like playing in clubs or halls because it’s a lot more intimate and more fun. Plus at a show you know the people are there for you, and not just walking around a festival and happen to stumble across your stage.

TSS: What’s next for Ookay?
Ookay: Collaborations, new EP, more tour dates, bus tour around the US and maybe Europe, work on new singles, maybe an album. If I do an album it’ll be less bangers and more composed and written out songs.

TSS: Where do you think EDM is going?
Ookay: It’s growing really fast. The amount of talent right now is unbelievable. Trap is huge right now but who knows what the next big genre could be. It could be some weird mix of Jazz, Funk, and Dubstep. It’s impossible to know before it happens.

TSS: Fuck, Marry, Kill: Diplo, Michelle Obama, Dillon Francis
Ookay: I’d marry Diplo, fuck Dillon, and I guess kill Michelle..Just process of elimination, I hope I don’t get arrested for saying that.

TSS: Would you rather fight 100 duck sized horses, or 1 horse sized duck?
Ookay: Probably the duck sized horses, they’re vegetarians so they wouldn’t want to eat me, just tiny bites.

Friday, May 31st, UK dubstep legend Flux Pavilion blew the roof off the Palladium in Worcester, MA when he stopped there on his Spring “Blow The Roof” tour. The show started at 8 P.M. and it was went until 1:30 A.M. As soon as I arrived to the venue, I noticed the ridiculously long line for will call. Luckily, thanks to Steez Promo and Bass Nation New England, they put me on the list to review the show. As soon as I entered the venue I was not surprised that it was jam packed. Flux Pavilion, along with local favorites Mike Skillz, DJ Wubson, and Big I.C. DJ Wubson was a personal favorite of mine. Everyone in the place was dancing to the constant banger’s the opener’s were throwing down. The cool thing about the Palladium is that it is split into a floor area, and then there is a bar section and a lounge. Wherever you decide to go, your not far from the stage. As soon as it struck midnight, Flux Pavilion came out. This was the moment everyone was waiting for. I saw Flux’s earlier “Blow The Roof” tour when it stopped at Fete Nightclub in Providence in March of earlier this year. I also saw him when he played at Electric Zoo 2012 with Doctor P. Just like he did in his Providence show, at the Palladium he opened with “The Scientist” off his newest EP “Blow The Roof”. At this point I was up front experiencing the show in a new light. The bass made the venue shake, there is nothing quite comparative to it. The energy that was flowing through everyone was absolutely incredible and had to of been experienced first hand to realize the pure power music has on people. I didn’t think the audience could get any more hyped up until he dropped “Come Find Me”, his new collab. with Cookie Monsta. Flux’s set lasted about an hour and a half. The time had come for the final song and I knew what it had to be. The past three times I saw Flux, he dropped “Gold Dust” at the end. I stood there overjoyed as Flux Pavilion, for the last song of the night, dropped “Gold Dust”, one of my favorite song’s Flux has ever touched. No matter where he goes, Flux Pavilion is guaranteed to throw the fuck down! If Flux Pavilion is coming to a venue near you, I would highly suggest you go and support one our of favorite producer’s in the game! I would like to thank Steez Promo and Bass Nation New England for allowing me this opportunity to cover the show and share with you guys my incredible experience I had.
